the good old days...

I'm going to get off the "food channel" soon, but just for fun I thought I'd post this menu. It is from 1957, when I was 8 years old. We had a Woolworth's within walking distance in our home town, ("walking distance being about 12 city blocks and of course we walked!) and I can remember sitting at the lunch counter and seeing those huge German Chocolate Cakes on a pretty plate with a clear glass cover. This menu says a slice was 15 cents. A toasted 3 decker chicken salad sandwich is the most expensive item on the menu at 65 cents. A king-size coke is 10 cents! I also remember being served with a smile, and how leaving a few coins by your plate was an acceptable tip. Bring back some memories?

I remember! I always wanted to 'stand' at the counter to eat. My mother, of course, would have had to hold me. She would not even consider this. Not that I'm bitter...

I used to go there and have their meatloaf

Sorry. I somehow double-posted my comment and deleted the second one.

My oh my, how grand a memory. I was 7 that year and remember sitting at my great aunt's soda counter and having a root beer float in those tall float glasses with the fluted sides, on a stem, with the long-handled silver spoons. She never charged that I remember, but the menu said they were 15 cents. She would send me off with a Slowpoke or a liquorice. Thanks for the sweet memory.

Heavens yes! We walked to Woolworth's too, a couple miles, if I remember right. And all uphill too, heheh...

I remember sitting at the counter, perusing the menu. Hmmm...good stuff!

How neat! I don't think I ever sat at a Woolworths counter but my small town had a drug store with the soda fountain where we could get cherry soda's. MMMMM! I miss that place. It closed 20 years ago. You were asking me about what was in the ziplock bowl? Ice. My 4 year old keeps filling it with water and putting it into the freezer. That's about as creative as we're getting this summer LOL!!
