We're all a bunch of nuts...

Last weekend, hubby and I celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary. It coincided with a family tailgate party in Columbus at Ohio State University. So...

Hubby did a work-at-home day on Friday and we were able to leave home about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, drive the couple hours to Columbus, check into our hotel, and go out to one of our favorite Italian restaurants for dinner:

I think it is so funny that the trees are growing on the roof!

We met up with some other friends and family members back at the hotel and enjoyed relaxing in the whirlpool. Nice :)

My unmarried little sister and her bunch have been tailgating at OSU games for 15 years now. I, frankly, would be dead if I did this every weekend during football season, and once a year is just the right amount of tailgating for me.

They had some fun on me as well...I guess I have a reputation for preferring my coffee in a cup and saucer...
notice my buckeye necklace that my niece Sarah made me

well, it really DOES taste better than in a Styrofoam cup, doesn't it? And we really NEEDED coffee, because you gotta get there EARLY early to get your spot in order to set up 900 sq. ft. of tarps...

a complete kitchen...

games...

and of course the TV's...

We knew, of course, that this would NOT be the weekend to be thinking at all about diets, and we weren't disappointed. While the ones who were setting up arrived about 5:00 a.m., we had the luxury of arriving around 8, and just in time for breakfast, which consisted of egg omelettes made with cheese and steak, hash browns, biscuits & sausage gravy, as well as an array of fruit and other odds and ends.

Soon after breakfast, more food started appearing...everything from jambalaya to chickencacciatore, wings, sausages, meatballs, veggies, fruit, chips and dips, salads, pizzelles...

this is one of the things I brought to share:

Buckeye Bars

They are so rich that I usually cut them into 1/2 inch squares and call them "Buckeye Bites".

OSU beat Illinois 30-0. The seasoned tailgaters say it's always better when OSU wins...they get more help cleaning up and tearing down. When they lose, folks tend to leave early.

We had a wonderful time in spite of THIS:

Because quite frankly,

BUCKEYE BITES

Combine with mixer:

2 1/3 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 cups peanut butter
1 Tbsp. vanilla
1 stick melted butter

Spread in 9 x 13 pan.

Melt one bag semi-sweet chocolate chips with 1 stick butter.
Pour over peanut butter mixture and refrigerate.
Don't eat too many.

GO BUCKS! See ya next year!

What a GREAT Time!
I have never tailgated and now I know what I've been missing!!!! LOL

Congratulations on 33 years of marriage.
We are close behind you at 31 1/2.
Blessings.

Hi Jess! When I was growing up, a tailgate party meant we lifted the tailgate on the station wagon and made some bologna sandwiches on Wonder Bread with some mustard! ha!

I owe you an email...will catch up soon.

It looks like you had a lot of fun!!

yeah, I know. The "family" tailgate date didn't take our anniversary date into consideration. LOL!

Hey there.

Your childhood memories reminded me of the few times our family went to the Drive-in Movie while growing up in NJ.
How magical it seemed to drive there in our pjs
and listen to the speaker box clipped to the car window.
Even in my turbulent childhood there were some precious times! Thank YOU LORD.

Looking forward to your email when you get a chance. =)

Wow you are really taking me down memory lane now, Jess. I had forgotten all about the speaker boxes...what a hoot!

Sadly, I felt compelled to copy that recipe. Hopefully I will be able to follow your instruction about NOT overeating them. These sound fabulous! I have never tailgated, either. I had NO idea! What a great way to spend time with your family!

Rebecca, make the recipe when you have to "take something" to an event...that way you can just eat a "bite" and they won't be around the house tempting you. I know that I could never have a whole pan calling my name! :)

Even though I'm a University of Michigan fan, I do love those Buckeye Bites!
That's some kind of tailgating! How fun, and how much work!! When we went to our grandsons football games, the tailgating food was the best part of it for me! Ha!
It's wonderful to see family having such a great time!

Hi Pat! Oh that is so funny...the only umbrellas we have are blue & yellow (our hometown colors) and we had to get them out when it started raining.
We were a bit nervous about that, in a sea of red and gray! It was a lot of fun though...I'm really not a huge sports person, but like I said, once a year with the family is just about right for me! Gives me an excuse to make Buckeye Bites!
